About the role

The Deputy Commander of J1 at the Arctic Command in Nuuk will support the Head of J1 in leading, coordinating and developing the HR section. This senior position combines leadership, strategic planning and hands‑on HR policy work to shape the future of the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Head of J1 in managing daily operations and long‑term strategic initiatives.
• Act as the official deputy, representing the Head of J1 during absences.
• Develop and implement local HR policies, organizational structures and workforce planning.
• Conduct analysis and prepare decision‑making documents on structure and policy matters.
• Drive the transformation of J1 into a Level II coordinating and advisory staff function.
• Ensure clear interfaces with internal units and external defence authorities.

Required profile

• Captain, Captain Lieutenant or reserve officer at the same functional level.
• Strong background in HR from a Level II authority, public sector or private market.
• Proven case‑handling and analytical judgment, able to translate complexity into clear recommendations.
• Independent problem‑solving, stakeholder engagement and strong communication skills.
• Leadership style based on trust, inclusion and willingness to work hands‑on.
